As the third branch of government, courts are inevitably part of the political system. And as guardians of our society's tradition of government by law, judges have an obligation to speak out on issues that affect the administration of justice.

Newspaper and radio attacks on individual judges have troubled many of us in the legal community, and reflect a deep misunderstanding of the role of the courts.

So, too, does the groundswell of support for cameras in the courtroom.

How will our legal system look in the next centuries? I recently gave a speech on The Future of Advocacy in the Next Millennium.
